The barbarian's homelands should be far from the immediate area where the game session or chronicle begins.  If using the regions mentioned in Born of the Soil, some possible choices might be:


The homeland should have a culture that is distinct and less civilized than what the other adventurers are accustomed to.  If the general setting itself is somewhat barbaric, then the homelands are still a far distance from the starting campaign map, unique and likely exotic and alien by contrast.
